It can't be captured in the photo above, but we expanded the size of the living room by almost double. This was simply achieved by installing a large floor covering which created definition of the space and then positioned chairs opposite the couch. This completely opened up the space. Before, a small rug in front of the sofa visually divided the room in two with 1/2 the room empty and used as a thoroughfare. Now, the living room is expansive in feel with more living and circulation space.

I love textiles and decorative pillows in particular because they instantly ad life and punch to a room. The client selected a classic linen sofa as foundation for the room. To add interest, we used several silk velvet pillows which reminded the client of her family crests and heritage. The color of them inspired the deep red linen chairs which add vibrancy, presence and spark to the room. The client wanted to display a stunning zebra skin she had which we draped on a side table. She had beautiful artifacts to use, including an antique hummum soap box and a bowl of ostrich eggs. The beautiful mix of varied materials and textures including jute, silk, linen, mirror, metal, wood and mercury glass create warmth and visual interest in this intimate space. French doors opening to a lush garden complete this delightful, happy room.

This looks like a classic California landscape, does it not? The white frills of Queen Anne's Lace, the graceful olives, the golden grasses. In fact, much of the flora we consider ubiquitous is native to the Mediterranean. This shot was taken in the hills surrounding Ephesus en route to a charming, ancient village called Şirince on the Agean coast of Turkey. Enjoy amazing tales of how and why we have the great array of flowers and plants we do via The Plant Hunters by Carolyn Fry with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England.

Part of the charm and beauty to me of the various rooms are the punches of pink...and so starts a great article edited by Kendall Conrad . "Pink is the color of the new chapter in Jacqui Getty's house."

About a year ago, I found that I too was buying pink flowers, pink clothing, pink anything. It was almost like a vitamin that my soul needed. Curious about this draw, I began looking online to learn more about our attraction to color. I found a fascinating site, www.colorquiz.com which is used extensively in Europe to discern personality traits. Check it out. I found the results simply uncanny...

Every August, after traipsing the endless isles of the New York Gift Show, my gift to self is a leisurely stroll through Bergdorf Goodman and a lovely lunch at BG, the 7th floor dining room designed by Kelly Wearstler. The soothing robin's egg blue and apple green color scheme mirror the green park/blue sky palette of the Central Park view. This is a year-round oasis.

The salads are tantalizing; this lobster, crab and pink grapefruit concoction was simply délicieux! And the Rosé Château d’Esclans “Whispering Angel” from Provence was the perfect accompaniment.

As always, the window displays DELIGHT – the Fall 2011 fashions are artfully poised between yards and yards of zipper garlands. Inside, the most exquisite jewelry in the dreamiest of rooms dazzles and delights, then up up up to Shoes! Fashion! Lingerie! The coup of this jaunt being a Kiki de Montparnasse bra at 70% off!

Hagia Sophia

From Byzantine jewels to the Byzantine architectural wonder Hagia Sophia, the splendors of East and West merge into legendary artistry. Translated from Greek, Hagia Sophia means "Holy Wisdom."

Constantine The Great, Roman Emperor from 306 to 337, founded the Eastern Roman Empire in Byzantium (soon called Constantinople, then Istanbul) in a move to bring coherence and integration of the East into the vast empire. He was the first emperor to convert to Christianity, and as well, proclaimed tolerance of all religions throughout the Roman Empire.

The structure we see today was designed by a Greek scientist and physicist at the bequest of Emperor Justinian. Constructed between 532 and 537, it was a cathedral until 1453 when it was converted to a mosque with the addition of the distinctive minarets. Ordained in 1935 as a museum by the Republic of Turkey, Hagia Sophia remains one of the greatest architectural marvels and holy sites in the world.

The village of Alaçatı reminds me of my childhood when a stroll through the (original) El Paseo in Santa Barbara was full of quaint restaurants and shops. In Alaçatı, Bougainvillea and Oleander line the cobblestone streets, and pretty things beckon from small shops. Wonderful outdoor restaurants are everywhere - and YaYa is the most chic and fabulous!

Alaçatı is a precious old town on the coast near Izmir Turkey. Like Santa Barbara, there are strict architectural codes in place to maintain the traditional character of the Turkish/Grecian designs. Buildings are stone or white stucco with colored shutters topped with clay tiles. Exquisite!

Heading out into the city, we locate the Misir building on Istikal. It is full of art galleries, most notably The Galerist, which has a showing of Andy Warhol films.

With 5 hours to kill before our flight to Istanbul, we opted to take the tube into London. Strangely, I'd never been to The Courtauld Gallery. Here lives Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'Herbe, along with many other art history book icons and classics including Van Gogh's last painting, Peach Trees In Blossom.

Dinner Fit For A Queen

Dinner in Arundel. I highly recommend The Townhouse - small and super-chic with coffered ceilings, crisp linens, and a view if the Arundel Castle walls. I opted for the local Lobster Thermador - a divine and rich treat. The Townhouse also offers rooms to let, which is worth exploring...another trip!

PS I love the simplicity, unisex wording, and British charm of...the LOO!

Cake To Write Home About

What better treat after a castle visit than to have tea and cake? Not far from Arundel Castle is the fine food establishment of Pallant, with a menu of scrumptious cake choices created by The Farmhouse Cookery. Rhubarb and ginger? Chocolate? I settled on the orange sponge cake - a layer cake infused with orange oil, a marmalade and cream layer, and topped with orange frosting!

I bought the entire cake and took it to go to sit riverside with coffee and companion on a spectacular summer afternoon. We ate half the cake in one happy sitting - I pronounce it The Best Cake I've Ever Had!

Pictured above is a luscious Lotus Essence, housed in a precious glass vial. The scent is dreamy on everyone who wears it. Just arrived from Cairo, it is pure and enchanting. The plants are pressed to release the essence; there are no other ingredients.

The lotus is one the most revered flowers in all the world. Its beauty, colors and life have been of huge inspiration in art, philosophy, religion, cuisine and culture for eons.

We are lucky to have our own Lotus Land, Ganna Walska's beloved gardens and estate in Montecito. As much as I enjoy a great lap pool, I love that the swimming pool of the estate, built in the 1920's, was later utilized as a home for numerous varieties of the namesake lotus flowers.

Pictured to the left, somewhere in Ho Chi Minh City, float artfully worked lotus flowers, drifting in a huge brass pot. While the flowers are used decoratively, the roots are used in cooking. One of the most refreshing and delicious salads I've ever had in my life was a lotus root salad in Hanoi. There are so many aspects to this amazing plant! While I've not tried this recipe for lotus-root-salad, it sounds délicieux!

The lovely tree lined Place des États-Unis (of the 16^th arrondissement) is not on the main tourist track but definitely worth the trip while in Paris. Here, two of my favorite Parisian retailers have teamed up to create the most extraordinary exhibit. ”Plus Vrai Que Nature” – Truer Than Real Life – is presented at Maison de Baccarat in the former mansion of art patron Marie-Laure de Noailles who used to entertain the likes of Man Ray, Cocteau and Dali.

Seemingly, the spirit of these surrealists lives on here. Philippe Starck created the interior design and is a master at conserving the grand historical aspects of the building, while interjecting his trademark flair of theatrical decor, elegance and unexpected chic.

Musée Baccarat’s show highlights the incredible range and virtuosity of Baccarat’s crystal creations inspired by nature, in concert with numerous birds, butterflies and creatures from Deyrolle. The blue morpho butterfly poised on the lip of a hand cut, hand painted turn of the century Baccarat vase is a breathtaking example of both man and nature’s most sophisticated and beautiful creations. Take the time to book ahead for lunch or tea in the Cristal Room housed in a fantastic salon of contrast; raw brick walls, crystal chandeliers, pale pink banquettes – it is fantastique!

Note the mirror above, one of many exquisite mirrors, doors, tables and textiles I found recently while in Morocco. Marrakech in particular, has long been a destination of chic Parisians and other savy travelers seeking a unique and intriguing culture with sublime architecture, decorative arts and cuisine.

Most recently I stayed at a small charming riad called talaa 12, located on the north end of the main marketplace. I found it via Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a travel company I highly recommend out of London. After hours of shopping in 90 degree heat, amid bustling crowds, the calls to prayer and the tens of thousands of things to see, this room was a true oasis. Opening onto the central interior garden, this magical room was a quiet and serene haven in the midst of a vibrant and ancient city.

Goleta Beach, Santa Barbara CA

If I were to pick one favorite beach day of the many I have spent here in Santa Barbara, this shot would represent that day. I grew up here, spending many happy hours at Hendry’s Beach, East Beach, Butterfly, Miramar, Summerland, Santa Claus and Carpinteria Beaches. Strangely, even though I am a UCSB graduate, I had never spent any time at Goleta Beach.

Awhile back I was out near the airport, picking up a freshly powder coated vintage patio set for the store. It was late afternoon and I wanted to take a beach walk back in Montecito, however with the sun setting, I chose the more immediate option; Goleta Beach. I arrived to find an infinite blue sky and a spectacular minus tide before me. The picture speaks for itself; it was a classic SB beach day awash in the incomparable warmth and langor of late afternoon. While there, make sure to check out the Goleta Slough Rookery - high up in the Eucalyptus trees are many exquisite birds building their nests and tending their babies; Great Blue Heron, Double Crested Cormorants and Great Egrets among them.
